MY FIRST JOB AS A FREELANCE WRITER

It was on the night of July 24, 2020. My friend and coursemate sent me a WhatsApp message. He wrote, "Bro, I know you write very well. So there's this blog we're starting and we are looking for a good writer. I don't know if it's something you can do"

I said yes. "I'd like to write for money." I thought. He said they'd need a publishable article on Big Brother Naija for a test of my writing skill. Most of my writing, he said would be on BBN as it was an entertainment blog. He added that if I could write something that same night, his boss - the owner and chief editor of the blog would review it and rate me immediately.

Since the boss is from and based in the United States, it meant that I had almost 6 hours before the end of her active (working) hours so I got to work immediately

But then, there was a problem. I had never been a fan or viewer of Big Brother Naija. So I was faced with the challenge of writing about something I knew nothing about.

But then, I knew that Big Brother Naija has faced criticism based on its contents, so I first came up with a title for my article (that was my first win)😄

The title:- BIG BROTHER NAIJA: CRITICISM AND DEFENSE OF NIGERIA’S MOST POPULAR REALITY TV SHOW

With this title, I knew exactly what I needed to write: An article explaining why the BBN is being criticized and why the criticisms shouldn't matter.

This took me to the most interesting part of every article writing - the research. I went straight to Google to read as much content (news, gossip, or gists) as I could on BBN, from season 1 to the then present season (season 5)

I jotted all the points I needed and started writing.

In less than 2 hours, I was done with a two and a half pages article with a word count of about 819.

At about 1:14 am, I sent my draft of the article for review. After the review, my article (from the title to the argument) happened to be exactly what the publisher needed, it was published during daybreak that day and that was how I got hired.

And till this day despite the project not continuing due to some issues, I've enjoyed a great relationship with the boss/chief editor of the blog. She has been nice and would recommend me any day any time.
